Hey, oh Expert and most Wonderful Guru daughter.  The Marine Corps has copytrighted all their Eagle, Globe, and Anchor (EGA)  images below and does not want us putting them up. The most iconic image I have is the Eagle and Globe above which I took with my cell phone through a telescope. I would like to make it into my own EGA.  Could you add an anchor - not the Marine Corps anchor but another one that is original - drawing or photo.  I think it could go in the upper right corner or below, but what ever you think. It could also have the words Semper Fi, Marines or Jarhead. And I will likely use all the alternatives on my blog. Thanks much. Love you.

Ghostly Marine

I took this photo from the top of Hill 327 in Danang, Vietnam, in 1970. A Marine Huey Helicopter was flying through the cloud of an explosion. I don't know how the ghostly Marine got into the photo.

The photo reflects the pensive sadness and loss and confusion of the Vietnam War. How we were young and risking our lives in an unpopular war. How we were bonded together and then were lost to each other, with memories fading.

I don't know how the two photos became blended - likely a double exposure. I was not sure who the Marine was in the photo. I thought it might be my friend Griffin but could never find him over the years. We had been Officer Candidates together, gone to the Basic School at Quantio together, and then went to Vietnam on the same day. I saw him a few times in Vietnam and then never saw him again and could not find him when I looked for him. And I had forgotten about the photo.

At our first ever reunion, a fifty year reunion last year of our Lieutenant Basic School Class, basicschool.us, Marlin Woodruff Griffin and I reconnected. My wife and I got to know him, his wife, and son. We all agreed that he was the Marine in the photo. We were second Lieutenants in Vietnam when the photo was taken. He is now a retired Judge in Virginia. His family was thrilled to see the photo.

The Ringling School of Art and Design recently asked for photos for portraits. I sent them this photo. It would make an interesting painting. If they paint it I will send it to Marlin and his family.
